About National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities & programs. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since inception of the NSS in the year 1969, the number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million up to the end of March 2018 students in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.

The NSS Badge Proud to Serve the Nation:

All the youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping needy.

The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of a the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours.

Red colour in the badge signifies energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers.

The Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

Benefits of Being a NSS Volunteer:

A NSS volunteer who takes part in the community service programme would either be a college level or a senior secondary level student. Being an active member these student volunteers would have the exposure and experience to be the following:

The Duties and Functions of the NSS Programme Officer

The Program Officer is one of the important person in NSS Organization, he/she plays vital role and responsible for the organization of NSS Unit, implementation of NSS Program under the supervision and direction of Chairman and Principal of the College. He/she will be responsible to carry out the instructions issued by the Program Coordinator of the University. NSS Regional Centre and State Liaison Officer for the implementation of NSS activities as per the Action Plan given by the Program Coordinator, the Program Officer plays the role of an organizer, an educator, as a motivator, a Coordinator, a supervision, an administrator, and public relation officer to improve the quality and magnitude of NSS Programs in their institutions/ colleges. His/her functions can be stated as under.

1. An a Organizer

To interpret the scheme to the students / volunteers and other members of the college community and create awareness about the NSS Programs.
To provide information about NSS motto aims and objectives, philosophy and activities.
To enlist cooperation and coordination of community, agencies, government departments and non-governmental agencies.
To select or adopt the village/slum for service projects on the basis of utility and feasibility.

2. As an Educator

To prepare and conduct the orientation Program for NSS Volunteers, explain them about the concept of social service.
To prepare and teach them the methods and skills required for achieving the objectives of the NSS scheme.
To promote community education through meetings, talks, new bulletins, discussions etc.

3. As a Motivator

He/she co-ordinate the NSS activities in accordance with the volunteers ability and community demands.
He/She to coordinate various external resources available in the forms of government services, welfare agencies and voluntary organizations for the success of the NSS Programs.
He/She coordinates internal resources available in the form of teaching expertise of teachers for enhancing the knowledge and skills of the students in implementation of the NSS scheme.

4. As a Supervisor

He/She supervises the NSS Program undertaken by Volunteers.
He/She supervisory and consultative skills should enable students to set realistic goals and see problems as a challenge and take appropriate steps to solve them.
He/She to assist in evaluation and follow-up work.

5. As an Administrator

He/She to keep the principal or Chairman of NSS, College advisory committee and the program Coordinator of the University informed of the University informed of the programs of the Unit.
To run day-to-day administration of the programs.
To attend correspondence regularly between college and university.
To prepare progress report periodically for submission to college and university.
To maintain record of volunteers participation and programs undertaken.
To keep accounts and stock in the prescribed forms.

6. As a Public Relation Person

To inform the community about the NSS programs through press reports, radio and television programs.
To create awareness, through pamphlets, seminars and meetings.
To initiate to create awareness for image building of NSS in order to inspire and motivate the NSS Volunteers.
