Pharmaceutics

The Department of Pharmaceutics is a place where an unwavering commitment to excellence in research, instruction and service is demonstrated through the extraordinary productivity and success of our faculty, staff and students. Our program focuses on Physiologically-Based Approaches to Drug Delivery and Disposition. We offer a training environment that includes research laboratories with equipments such as Tablet punching machine, Ultrasonicator, Dissolution apparatus, Disintegration apparatus, coater, edge laboratory instrumentation and technologies, highly experienced, qualified award-winning faculty, devoted and experienced and able staff.
Pharmaceutics is the discipline of pharmacy that deals with the process of turning a new chemical entity (NCE) or old drugs into a medication to be used safely and effectively by patients. It is also called the science of dosage form design. There are many chemicals with pharmacological properties, but need special measures to help them achieve therapeutically relevant amounts at their sites of action. Pharmaceutics helps relate the formulation of drugs to their delivery and disposition in the body. Pharmaceutics deals with the formulation of a pure drug substance into a dosage form.
At the undergraduate degree level, courses may cover biology, calculus, chemistry, microbiology and introductory courses in drug design and development. However, graduate degree programs are more common and include specializations in areas such as drug delivery systems or biopharmaceutics, conducting research in drug actions and drug design and writing a master’s thesis or a doctoral dissertation. Graduate-level studies include studies in pharmaceutical science, molecular cell biology, drug metabolism, drug design.

The department research activities focus on formulation science and drug delivery with Particular emphasis in the following areas:

  • Pharmaceutical Engineering
  • Novel drug delivery systems such as sustained and controlled release formulation
  • Solubility and oral bioavailability enhancement using polymer and lipid based approaches
  • Nanopharmaceutics based drug delivery eg. gold nanoparticles, nanocomposites,
  • Nanomicellar system, nanovesicular, polymeric nonoparticles and solid lipid nanoparticles etc.
  • Site specific delivery and targeted nanoparticles of therapeutic drugs for the treatment of cancer
  • Application of Quality by Design (QbD) in drug development
  • Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical research
  • Novel phytoformulations
