The renaissance of herbal medicine in India creates a demand for studies in the field of pharmacognosy. From a practical perspective Pharmacognosy deals with the natural drugs obtained from Living organisms such viz plants, microbes, and animals. Till date, many important drugs have originated from natural sources which continue to be good model molecules in drug discovery. Traditional medicine is also a part of pharmacognosy and most of the third world countries still depend on the use of herbal medicines. Consequently, pharmacognosy has always maintained its popularity in pharmaceutical sciences and plays a critical role in drug discovery.

In four years of U.G. course the student will learn different aspects of pharmacognosy such as plant anatomy and physiology, identification, Phytochemistry of medicinal and aromatic plants, isolation and estimation of important therapeutically active phytoconstituents from plants, formulate and standardize various herbal products, recent techniques for search of new products, evaluation of herbal drugs and basic requirement for establishment of herbal drug industry, commerce and regulations for plant based products in domestic and world market.
